Marijuana use has become legal in a number of states. Obviously, users must perceive some benefit, but new research in the journal Scientific Reports suggests marijuana smokers may not be aware the drug significantly impairs vision. Researchers at the University of Grenada in Spain performed exhaustive visual tests—when participants had not been exposed to marijuana smoke before the tests and while under effects of the smoke. Ability to focus, glare sensitivity and contrast sensitivity were among the effects of smoking marijuana. In fact, all aspects of vision suffered, but perhaps just as important is the lack of awareness that their vision was impaired, which could pose a danger when performing everyday tasks.
