AVOIDING FRAILTY

from journal of the American Geriatrics Society

A healthy diet may reduce of risk becoming frail as we get older— specifically, the Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and nuts. Frailty is accompanied by a number of other issues, such as feeling low in energy, weight loss, and weakened muscles that increase the risk of falls and fractures and loss of independence. A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society analyzed published associations between a Mediterranean diet and development of frailty in older people. There are reported health benefits from the diet at any age, but this study found consistent evidence that older people may better maintain muscle strength, activity, weight and energy by following the Mediterranean diet.
