Age-based bias—known as ageism—can have many forms, such as denied access to health care or negative cultural stereotypes. Researchers at Yale University School of Public Health found evidence that ageism harms the health of older people. The study is part of the new Global Campaign to Combat Ageism and appears in the journal PLOS ONE. The Yale researchers found that ageism in its various forms led to worse mental and physical health, including shorter life expectancy. Evidence of denied access to medical care was found in eighty-five percent of all the studies reviewed—more than four hundred studies in forty-five countries. The review also found ageism affected older people regardless of their age, sex or ethnicity.
