A new look at the number of deaths from
diabetes suggests previous estimates are
too low. Boston University School of Public
Health notes that diabetes is associated
with a number of other diseases and death
certificates sometimes do not assign
diabetes as an underlying cause of death.
The new estimate of the proportion of
deaths attributable to diabetes is as high as
twelve percent, much higher than the
previous estimate of around three percent.
That new formula would make diabetes the
third leading cause of death in this country.
This seems senseless considering that with
diet, exercise and a variety of medications,
diabetes may be controllable. The
research was published in the journal PLOS
ONE.
