from American Academy of Ophthalmology
This may sound like a commercial for
cataract surgery. It is not. But it is the
result of a study presented to the annual
meeting of the American Academy of
Ophthalmology—that following cataract
surgery, near misses and crashes on the
road decreased by forty-eight percent.
Cataracts are a normal consequence of
aging as vision gradually becomes cloudy.
By age eighty, about one-half of us will
have developed cataracts. Surgery is lowrisk,
fast and effective, usually making
reading and driving easier. Lead author of
the study, Dr. Jonathan Ng says the
results highlight the importance of timely
cataract surgery in maintaining safety,
mobility and independence of older
drivers.
