Over the last five years, more than three hundred sports-related deaths have occurred at the high school level. With that statistic, University of Connecticut began publishing a state-by-state report concerning the health and safety policies for secondary schools. The report evaluates safety programs of each state with a focus on the four conditions attributed to ninety percent of the sports deaths. So far, thirty-eight states are taking part, but with millions of students participating in school sports, more needs to be done to raise awareness. Rebecca Stearns, director of the program, says many schools in the country remain unprepared to respond effectively in the event of potentially life-threatening complications. The report is in the American Journal of Sports Medicine.
