Studies often consider physical activity and
sitting time separately as risks for obesity
and chronic diseases, such as type 2
diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
However, new research published in the
journal of the European Association for the
Study of Diabetes suggests the two
behaviors are closely linked, and that
higher levels of physical activity and lesser
amounts of sitting time may be required to
substantially reduce obesity. Although the
reasons or mechanisms are unclear, the
lowest risk of becoming obese were
observed in people who reported high
levels of physical activity AND lowest levels
of sitting time compared to either behavior
on its own. The researchers say the
combination of high physical activity and
lower amounts of sitting time may simply
represent total energy expenditure.
