The latest federal government guidelines
suggest screening for diabetes if patients
are between forty and seventy AND are
overweight or obese. Northwestern
University researchers say that’s a good
start because it focuses on the most
predictive risks for developing diabetes.
However, those researchers found the new
guidelines missed more than one-half of
people who are at high risk for diabetes,
especially those who were outside the age
and weight ranges specified under the
guidelines. The study looked at health
data from more than fifty thousand
Americans from the Midwest and
Southwest. The results were published in
a special diabetes edition of PLOS
Medicine. Researchers say not identifying
such high risk people means they could
miss out on preventive measures, such as
eating right, exercising or taking
medications.
