Happiness may be, in part, linked to what
we eat. British researchers wrote in the
American Journal of Public Health that
eating more fruits and vegetables suggests
a feel good factor from up to eight
portions per day. The study goes beyond
the finding that fruit and vegetables can
reduce risk of cancer and heart attacks—
although just knowing that should make
us happier. Twelve thousand people took
part in the study, keeping food diaries and
taking psychological tests. Happiness
increased incrementally for each extra
daily portion of fruits and vegetables per
day—up to eight portions. Researcher
Andrew Oswald says eating fruits and
vegetables apparently boosts our
happiness far more quickly than it
improves physical health. But the
eventual physical benefits are welldocumented.
