from British Dental Journal
A study in the British Dental Journal
documents the popularity of sports drinks
among school children. Nearly seventypercent
of school children surveyed in
South Wales drink sports drinks regularly
despite increasing their risk of obesity and
tooth erosion. The article contends
children are attracted to sports drinks for
mainly social reasons. The majority,
ninety percent, said taste was a factor in
purchasing sports drinks, with only
eighteen percent claiming any perceived
performance effect. Sports drinks are
intended for athletes taking part in intense
sporting events. The authors say water or
milk is sufficient to hydrate active
children—that high sugar sports drinks are
unnecessary for children and for most
adults.
