What if healthcare professionals could accurately predict if a sudden death heart attack was going to occur? That day may be closer, thanks to research at Russia’s Tomsk Polytech University. The research, published in the academic journal, Measurement, is based on development of a nanosensor that registers early abnormalities in heart muscles that otherwise can only be recorded during heart surgery or, more commonly, by ECG (electrocardiography). The core principles of the device are similar to ECG, but much more sensitive. Although still very experimental, the technology hopes to provide early detection of abnormal heart muscle cells when it is still possible to restore cell function using medication and avoiding surgery
