Feeling one’s oats is a saying that suggests feeling good. Eating whole oats is associated with reduced risk of chronic disease, including cardiovascular disease. Most of those benefits have been attributed to the high fiber, vitamin, mineral and phytochemical content of oats. But there may be yet another health reason. Research focuses on a compound called avenathramide—AVE for short—found only in oats. It may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits above and beyond the other qualities of oats. So feeling our oats may result from eating our oats. Food scientists at Tufts University and other research centers presented their study to the American Chemical Society Annual Conference. Several government and academic organizations support the research along with Quaker Oats Company.
