from JAMA Internal Medicine
We’ve been told over the years that eating
nuts is healthy. A new study in JAMA
Internal Medicine not only confirms that, but
extends the benefit to eating peanuts. The
benefit may be reduced risk of death from
all causes and death from cardiovascular
disease. Peanuts, because of their
affordability, may be a cost-effective
measure to improve cardiovascular health.
The study involved more than seventy-one
thousand Americans and a large group of
people living in China. Researchers at
Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
found consistent evidence that high
consumption of nuts and peanuts was
associated with a reduced risk of death,
especially reduced risk of ischemic heart
disease. The benefit existed even after
taking into consideration other factors such
as smoking, alcohol consumption and body
weight.
