The first year of college can be stressful.
Studies may be more difficult. Living away
from home may be challenging and firstyear
students may miss important the social
support they had in high school. The
advice from researchers at the University of
British Columbia is don’t be so hard on
yourself. Rather, they suggest, selfcompassion—
meaning don’t be overly
critical of yourself and recognize failure is
universal. Self-compassion enhances the
psychological need for autonomy and
enriched well-being. Researchers in the
five-month study found students who
reported higher levels of self-compassion
felt more energetic, alive and optimistic.
Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself is published

Differences.
