BRAIN STRENGTH

from American Journal of Geriatrics

Studies have suggested that our brain health is linked to physical activity, but there may be more to it. A study in the Journal of American Geriatrics shows, for the first time, a positive link between increasing muscle strength and improved brain function in older people with mild cognitive impairment. The new findings reinforce research published earlier this year showing MRI scans showed an increase in the size of specific areas of the brain among those taking part in a weight training program. Lead author Dr. Yorgi Mavros says the key is frequent resistance exercise, like weight lifting, at an intensity that will give maximum benefit to the brain. He says the more we can get people doing resistance training, the more likely we are to have a healthier aging population.
