from Children's Hospital Los Angeles and American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Beverages high in sugar are blamed for a
variety of health issues. Here is another.
Researchers at Children’s Hospital Los
Angeles reported in The American Journal
of Clinical Nutrition that consuming sugary
beverages while breastfeeding affects
cognitive development in children. Author
Dr. Michael Goran says breastfeeding can
have so many benefits, but he says
breastmilk is influenced by what the
mother eats and drinks even more than he
expected. Mothers who reported greater
consumption of sugary beverages had
children with poorer scores in cognitive
development. He says mothers may not
realize that what they eat and drink during
breastfeeding may have long-term effects
on infant development, but that is what
his results suggest.
