from United European Gastroenterology Conference
Numbers of deaths from Covid-19
continue to be staggering, but those may
not tell the whole story. Italian
researchers reported to the United
European Gastroenterology Conference
that delays in screening for colorectal
cancer because of the pandemic have
resulted in a jump in cancer death rates.
Screening aids in early detection of
colorectal cancer and, prior to the
pandemic, resulted in a steady decline in
cancer deaths. Authors of the study say
diagnosis of colorectal cancer by a variety
of screening methods at an early stage is
crucial to provide the best patient
outcomes and help prevent death rates
from rising even further. Generally, early
diagnosis and proper treatment is the
basis for long-term survival.
