WINE & EXERCISE

from European Society of Cardiology

A recent study involving moderate use of red and white wine suggests both may be good for your heart, including the health of your circulatory system. However, the study presented to the European Society of Cardiology shows the protection goes only to wine drinkers who exercise. Previous studies have shown wine increases levels of HDL, the good kind of cholesterol, so HDL levels were measured after one year. Wine consumption did not appear to improve HDL levels in either the red or white wine groups compared to the beginning of the study. The only positive and continuous result was in the group of people who exercised regularly at least twice a week--in addition to wine consumption. In that group HDL cholesterol increased and LDL, the bad kind of cholesterol decreased. Both red and white wine showed the same beneficial relationship when accompanied by exercise.
