SLEDDING SAFETY

from Nationwide Children's Hospital

The rate of injuries related to sledding declined during a recent ten-year period. While that is good news, more than two hundred thousand people, mostly children, were treated for sled injuries in hospital emergency rooms during that same decade. The study, from the Center for Injury Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and reported in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine, found most of these were collision injuries and that those were more likely to be head injuries. Authors urge use of helmets while sledding and using a safe sledding area free of obstacles, including motorized vehicles. They recommend having an adult present to make sure children are following safety guidelines while sledding.
