THINKING ROBOT

A number of research centers are working on the next generation of artificial limbs that can function simply by the thoughts of the user. Among the latest is a robot that can be controlled remotely just by the thoughts of a disabled person, restoring a sense of independence. Researchers in Switzerland enlisted nine disabled people and ten healthy volunteers, each wearing a hat with electrodes. In less than ten days of training, each of the people with disabilities managed to remotely control the robot with ease, even though the robot was located miles away. Will robots soon become part of the daily life of people with a disability? Researchers say for this to happen insurance companies will have to help finance the technology.
