Results of a five-year study using a new
treatment for prostate cancer shows a
higher cure rate than traditional
treatments. Stereotactic Body Radiation
Therapy involves high-dose radiation
beams entering the body from various
angles to reach the tumor while limiting
radiation to surrounding healthy tissue—
and in just five treatments. The cure rate
from Stereotactic Body Radiation in this
study was more than ninety-eight percent,
higher than the five-year cure rates from
other treatments, such as surgery or
conventional radiation. Authors of the
multi-center study say the high cure rate is
striking, with side effects similar or fewer
than other treatments mentioned.
Because this is relatively new, prostate
cancer patients may want to discuss the
pros and cons with their own doctor. The
study is published in the European Journal
of Cancer.
