MAKEUP SAFETY

from Cosmetic Dermatology

Of all the things that can make us sick, some could be staring at you in the mirror. I’m talking about makeup. A study from Baylor College of Medicine showed of nineteen cosmetic samples tested, nearly one-third were contaminated with bacteria. Dermatology professor Ramsey Markus says while manufacturing and packaging could be factors, not storing makeup properly and using out-of-date makeup also contribute to the risk. Authors of the study in Cosmetic Dermatology recommend keeping products properly sealed when not in use to protect against airborne germs and not keeping cosmetics for longer than six to twelve months. An exception is mascara, which should be switched out every three months. Professor Markus says there are unseen potential dangers in a product that is intended to help us put on our best face.
