An increasing number of older people use
dietary supplements and over-the-counter
medications along with their prescription
medicines—a two-fold increase over a five
year period. Research at the University of
Illinois at Chicago conducted in-home
interviews with people to accurately identify
what medications and supplements people
were actually taking. They found one in six
older adults regularly use potentially deadly
combinations. Fifteen potentially deadly
drug combinations were also identified.
Some older people trying to improve their
cardiovascular health may be taking
interacting products that could actually
worsen cardio risks. It is important to talk to
a health care professional about all
medications and supplements to avoid these
risks.
