Exercise is important to the health of our
bodies and brains, but exercise can only
do so much. New research in the journal
Current Biology explains why exercise
alone is not enough to lose weight.
Researchers say our bodies adapt to
higher activity levels, so we don’t
necessarily burn extra calories by
exercising more. Researchers, led by
Herman Pontzer of City University of New
York, say it’s time to stop assuming that
more physical activity always means
more calories burned. But there might
be a “sweet spot” for physical activity—
too little and we’re unhealthy, but
beyond that the body makes adjustments
in calories burned. This research
suggests that in addition to exercise, we
also need to focus on diet to manage
weight and/or reverse unhealthy weight
gain.
