POSTMENOPAUSAL WEIGHT

from University of Massachusetts Amherst

Postmenopausal women tend to have a greater percentage of body fat than their premenopausal counterparts, but the good news is they can more easily do something about it. A study from the University of Massachusetts Amherst suggests postmenopausal women gain more benefits in body composition from light physical activity, such as casual walking or yard work. Conversely, lack of exercise may also affect postmenopausal women more than premenopausal counterparts. The director of the North American Menopause Society, Dr. Wulf Utian notes regular exercise has so many benefits for women of all ages—from providing more energy and greater mobility to building bone density, but this study suggests postmenopausal women may help their weight management with a variety of physical activities.
