SUPPLEMENT DANGERS

from Hepatology Review

Herbal and dietary supplements now account for twenty percent of cases of liver toxicity reported to the United States Drug Induced Liver Injury Network. Products involved include those used for performance enhancement, bodybuilding and weight loss. In addition, lead author of the article in Hepatology Review, Dr. Victor Navarro, says injurious components in multi-ingredient nutritional supplements can often only be suspected of liver toxicity. He says considerable efforts are needed to identify potentially injurious ingredients of herbal and dietary supplements and to prohibit or more closely regulate them. The review resulted from a research symposium sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease.
