People with diabetes, including those without
known cardiovascular disease, have a very
high risk of a heart attack or stroke, but nearly
two out of five such people who could benefit
from statins do not take those medicines. A
research letter in the Journal of the American
College of Cardiology says previous studies
have shown taking a statin can significantly
cut the risk of a future cardiovascular event in
people with diabetes. Thirty-eight percent of
diabetics in this study were not on a statin,
which could be lifesaving. The American
Heart Association, the American College of
Cardiology and the American Diabetes
Association recommend statins for adults
between forty and seventy-five who have
diabetes.
