Even the cleanest of homes are prone to dust.
But have you ever thought about what is in
household dust. George Washington
University scientists collected dust samples
from all over the United States to learn
household dust exposes us to a wide range of
harmful chemicals. Most common was DEHP,
belonging to a toxic class of chemicals called
phthalates. Also dust samples showed traces
of phenols and flame retardant chemicals.
Researchers from the Milken Institute of Public
Health say household dust contains chemicals
from consumer products previously released
into the air of a home. Levels of household
dust can be reduced by using a strong
vacuum with a HEPA filter and avoiding
personal care products containing harmful
chemicals.
