Omega 3 fish oil has long been thought to
help prevent disease by reducing
inflammation, but now there is
confirmation of an additional benefit. A
report appearing in the Journal of
Leukocyte Biology says one type of omega
3 known as DHA actually enhances
function of a type of white blood cells,
called B cells—that instead of reducing the
overall immune response and lowering
inflammation, it may enhance functioning
of the immune system. People with
compromised immune systems could
benefit from that. Michigan State
University researchers were able to
confirm their laboratory tests by using
DHA-enriched fish oil on laboratory
animals. They saw that DHA-enriched fish
oil both enhanced B cell activation, plus
improved select antibody production,
which may aid immune response.
