Some surprising results of a study that
compared running to walking. Walking
briskly can lower your risk of high blood
pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as
much as running. The same energy used
for moderate intensity walking and
vigorous intensity running resulted in
similar benefits during the six-year study.
Researchers wrote in the American Heart
Association journal Arteriosclerosis,
Thrombosis and Vascular Biology that the
comparison to running and walking was
made by distance, not time. Walking may
be a more sustainable activity for some
people. Not surprising, the more the
runners ran and walkers walked the more
they benefited. The authors say people
are always looking for an excuse not to
exercise, but now they have a choice to
run or walk and still invest in their future
health.
